Boarding day—it’s the moment the countdown ends and your holiday officially begins. But let’s be honest: it can also be the part that causes the most stress if you’re not prepared.
From long queues and forgotten documents to delayed luggage and confusion at the terminal, boarding day can throw up a few surprises. But with a little prep (and a few insider tricks), you can breeze through the process and be poolside with a drink in hand before you know it.
Here are my top tips for making cruise embarkation day as smooth—and speedy—as possible.
✅ 1. Check In Online As Soon As You Can
Most cruise lines allow you to check in online weeks in advance. Don’t leave it until the last minute! By checking in early, you’ll get your boarding pass, upload your documents, and most importantly—you can often choose an early boarding slot.
This not only gives you a head start but also avoids unnecessary waiting at the terminal.
✅ 2. Download the Cruise Line’s App
Nearly every cruise line now has its own app, and trust me—it’s worth downloading. It’ll hold your digital boarding pass, deck plans, muster drill information, and sometimes even lets you pre-book shows or dining for day one.
Having everything in one place also helps you avoid shuffling through paperwork at the terminal.
✅ 3. Stick to Your Assigned Boarding Time
Cruise terminals are getting stricter about boarding windows. If you show up too early, you might be turned away until your time slot. If you show up late, you could end up at the back of the queue.
Arriving on time (not too early, not too late) keeps everything running smoothly for you and the ship’s crew.
✅ 4. Keep Documents Easily Accessible
This one’s simple but often forgotten. Don’t bury your passport or boarding pass at the bottom of your luggage. Have your ID, boarding pass, and any other required documents (like vaccination or visa details) on hand.
Digital versions are often accepted, but it doesn’t hurt to bring a paper backup—just in case technology fails you on the day.
✅ 5. Tag Your Bags Properly
If you’re checking luggage, print and attach your cruise line luggage tags before you arrive. Use plastic tag holders if you have them, or secure the paper ones tightly with tape or staples. A missing tag can delay your bags getting to your cabin—or worse, send them elsewhere.
Don’t forget to keep your cabin number handy just in case you need to confirm it.
✅ 6. Pack a Small Carry-On Bag
Your cabin might not be ready until the early afternoon, and your main luggage could take a while to arrive. Pack a small day bag with:
A swimsuit (if you fancy a dip right away)
Medications
Phone charger
Sunscreen
Any valuables or travel documents
A change of clothes (if needed)
Basically, anything you’ll want easy access to during those first few hours on board.
✅ 7. Complete Your Muster Drill Promptly
Every cruise still requires a safety drill (muster drill) before you set sail. These are much quicker now—often done via the app or a short visit to your muster station.
Some cruise lines restrict access to bars, food, or cabins until it’s completed—so do it early and get it out of the way.
Final Thought: Boarding Day Is the Start of the Fun
With a little preparation, you can avoid the faff and start your cruise the way it’s meant to begin—relaxed, excited, and ahead of the game.
