Why Cruising Is the Best Way to Travel Solo

Travelling solo can be one of the most rewarding experiences—but it can also come with a few worries: safety, boredom, awkward dinners alone, and the hassle of planning every little detail. That’s where cruising comes in. A cruise isn’t just a vacation; for solo travellers, it can be the ultimate way to explore the world with ease, comfort, and community.

Here’s why cruising is hands-down one of the best ways to travel solo:

1. You Get the Best of Both Worlds—Freedom and Structure

Cruising gives you total freedom to explore on your own terms, but also provides structure so you never feel lost. You can spend your days wandering cobbled European ports or relaxing by the pool with a book—then come back to your cabin, knowing dinner, entertainment, and tomorrow’s adventure are already sorted.

No Google Maps, no frantic searching for where to eat—just smooth sailing (literally).

2. You’ll Never Be “Alone” Unless You Want to Be

Cruise ships are naturally social environments. Whether you’re chatting over cocktails at the bar, joining a trivia team, or striking up a conversation on a shore excursion, opportunities to meet people come easily—without pressure.

Many cruise lines even host solo traveller meet-ups, welcome mixers, and shared dining options. You can be as sociable (or as independent) as you want.

3. Some Cruise Lines Cater to Solo Travellers

The cruise industry is waking up to the fact that solo travellers are on the rise. Lines like Norwegian Cruise Line offer dedicated studio cabins (no single supplement!) and solo lounges designed specifically for independent cruisers.

Other lines, like Holland America and Virgin Voyages, are also increasingly solo-friendly—with inclusive pricing, open seating at restaurants, and relaxed social vibes.

4. You Get to See Multiple Places Without the Hassle

One of the hardest parts of solo travel? The constant logistics. Getting from one place to another, lugging your bag, finding safe and affordable accommodation—it’s a lot to do solo.

Cruising takes all that off your plate. You unpack once and wake up somewhere new every day. No overnight trains. No language barriers at every turn. Just the joy of discovery—with your floating hotel taking care of the rest.

5. It Can Be Surprisingly Cost-Effective

While single supplements are still a thing on many lines, deals for solo cruisers are becoming more common—especially on off-peak sailings or with a good travel agent in your corner.

Plus, cruises often include meals, accommodation, entertainment, and transport—all in one. When you break it down, that’s a lot of value compared to booking everything separately on land.

6. It’s Safe and Secure

Safety is a top concern for any solo traveller, and cruises offer peace of mind. Ships have 24/7 security, onboard medical centres, and crew always on hand if you need assistance.

You’re also travelling in a group—whether you realise it or not. Even if you head out alone on a port day, there’s comfort in knowing the ship (and your cruise “community”) are waiting for you back at the dock.

It did not only bring me such a great community of like minded people, it has taken me to see so much of the world. I can honestly say I have met some of my life long friends on cruises when travelling alone; many of whom I now travel regularly with!

Travelling solo is one of the least lonely things you can ever do .. if you have not done so already please take the leap..
